A Little History

Wilmington College, a two-year institution that first opened its doors in 1947, has grown into a university that enrolls nearly 12,000 students.

In 1961, Wilmington College moved from a single building near the city's downtown to its present 650-acre campus on College Road.  In 1963, UNCW was granted four-year status. Since that time, UNCW has continued to grow into a prestigious university listed for ten consecutive years among the top 10 public universities in the South by US News and World Report.

Among public universities in North Carolina, UNCW is one of the top three "Best Values," according to Kiplinger's 2006 rankings, which ranks us 32nd nationally for in-state students and 48th nationally for out-of-state students.. Kiplinger's said schools in the top 100 "are noteworthy for their combination of top-flight academics and affordable costs."

For the fourth consecutive year, UNCW was named one of the “Best in the Southeast” in 2008 by the Princeton Review.
